Alabama earned its "Crimson Tide" nickname in 1907, after a muddy 6-6 tie against Auburn in what we now know as the Iron Bowl. Years later, in 1930, Atlanta Journal Everett Strupper wrote about how much Alabama football players had grown since he'd seen them play a season prior. Strupper observed how the players had allegedly "doubled in size," leading a fan to allegedly say (and Strupper to document), "Hold your horses, the elephants are coming!"
