Remarks: Chalinochromis sp. "Bifrenatus" is a mid-sized Tanganyikan cichlid found hiding in rock piles and away from the sandy areas of the lake. Like other Chalinochroms spp., they have bridle-like markings on the face (chalina in Greek translates to bridle).  What sets them apart from other species is that the markings continue down the length of their body in the form of two horizontal stripes along their lateral line rather than a series of dots.   When in breeding dress, males will sometimes display striking blue coloration on the edges of their fins and a yellow body in order to catch the female's attention. Chalinochromis sp. "Bifrenatus" can be spawned by keeping a small group of fish until they pair off. Once a pair is formed, they will defend a spawning site, such as a flower pot or cave, and lay 40-60 eggs.
