2021 Maison Rigal Vin Orange Gros Manseng
A native of the Basque country in France’s South West, Gros Manseng is usually known for its powerful dry whites.
Innovative growers’ co-op Rigal offers it up as an approachable take on skin contact styles.
Though orange tinted, it's less savoury than you’d imagine. With the skins adding both spice and lush texture to zesty citrus and green apple, this is balanced, bold and bright.
2022 Balmy Nights Amber
The Freeman vineyard in the Hilltops region of NSW is a happy hunting ground for many young producers looking for quality fruit.The majority Sauvignon Blanc component spent 16 days on skins, and the Pinot Gris a fortnight.The final result is an amber wine that is very easy to get the hang of. Lots of passionfruit, some spicy jalepeno in the mix.It's orange wine 101 from a great NSW label.
2023 Konpira Maru Disco Pocket Riesling Vermentino
Another delectably smashable wine here from the Konpira Maru lads - this one a blend of Riesling and Vermentino.Two vineyards contribute to this number, both hold a special place in Sam Cook's heart. The Aradale Vineyard which contributes the Riesling was the first vineyard he worked in and the Merbein vineyard, owned by the Chalmers family, was where the Konpira Maru label was born.The wine is fresh and clean with a gentle KM signature savouriness through the finish. Bright, crunchy and as refreshing as a cool swim on a hot day - this is delicious!
2023 Jumping Juice Orange
Patrick and Xavier at Jumping Juice have clambered aboard the orange express with this juicy, fresh skin contact wine with fruit sourced from the Riverland.
It's made up of Vermentino, Muscat Petit Grains and Zibibbo with varying amounts of time on skins, and just a smidge of sulphur added.
More importantly it is a bargain orange wine, bursting with floral perfume, and zinging like a well-made mandarin kombucha.
2022 Smallfry Tangerine Dream
The Tangerine Dream is one of the most experimental of the Smallfry wines. After sampling a few things at the Rootstock natural wine festival a couple of years ago, Wayne thought he might try his hand at making an amber wine. This is his eighth dig at the style and it's a beauty.
This skin-contact field blend of Semillon, Pedro Ximenes, Riesling, Roussanne and Muscat is the embodiment of Wayne's creative winemaking exploration, a left of centre amber wine for this region so steeped in tradition.
And quite simply, it is down-right delicious. We love it when winemakers broaden their horizons and just give something a go. Sometimes when you take a chance you can end up in a Tangerine Dream...
