Purchased at Paris’ clignancourt antiques market years ago this astonishing piece is a stunning example of traditional South Asian ceremonial dress, the velvet vest is likely a 19th-century reproduction of an aristocratic angarkha or court garment worn in Indo-Persian or Mughal courts.
The base is black velvet, densely hand embroidered with zardozi work—an intricate, raised metallic thread technique historically reserved for royalty. Using both gold and silver-toned metallic threads (possibly gilt copper alloy), the silk lined vest features, chain stitch, hook & eye closure & padded embroidery, forming symmetrical diamond grids and floral clusters in great detail. Also embellished with large cabochon stones in deep jewel tones—each inset within ornate metal thread floral settings.
Further dating with appraisers, historical & @ buffs suggest this was a recreation from the 1950s Following India’s independence in 1947, which lead to was a resurgence in traditional textile arts, Zardozi embroidery, saw a government-supported revival in this era. Artisans from Lucknow, Hyderabad, and Delhi began recreating historic court garments for cultural institutions, theater, and high-society ceremonial use.
