Welcome to the Coconino National Forest....
The Coconino National Forest covers 1,821,495 acres of land, with vegetative communities ranging from enchanting semiarid desert, magnificent ponderosa pine, mixed conifer forests, to alpine tundra. Elevations range from 2,600 feet at the confluence of Fossil Creek and the Verde River to 12,633 feet at the top of Humphreys Peak, the tallest peak on San Francisco Mountain.
Opportunities on the forest are as varied as the landscape. Whatever your taste for recreation or natural beauty, there’s something for you here. (There are scenic views of red rock canyons, stands of old-growth pine, streams, lakes, golden aspen in autumn, deer, turkey, and elk to hunt or photograph, and snow-covered slopes to ski in winter.) Whether horseback riding, hiking, bicycling, driving, or skiing, you’ll enjoy visiting Coconino National Forest!
The Forest Service, an agency within the United States Department of Agriculture, has “Caring for the Land and Serving People” as its motto. Accomplishing this involves stewardship of public lands while managing resources for multiple uses that include high quality water; wilderness, and outdoor recreation; quality habitat for plants and animals; wood for paper, homes, and hundreds of other uses; forage for livestock and wildlife; and minerals. The Forest Service, a leader in conservation, cooperates with states to assist landowners in applying good forest practices to their own lands. The Agency also carries out research to improve management of natural and cultural resources.

TRAVEL ON THE FOREST
More Americans than ever are using off-highway vehicles (OHVs) to enjoy the outdoors. However, if not managed carefully, motorized recreation can damage both the land and the resources. In 2005, the Forest Service published the Travel Management Rule which requires that each national forest and grassland provide for a system of National Forest System (NFS) roads, NFS trails, and areas on NFS lands designated for motor vehicle use and to display those designations on a motor vehicle use map (MVUM). It is the responsibility of the visitor to obtain and comply with the national forest’s or grassland’s current MVUM.
MAP SCOPE AND LIMIT
The only rules shown on this map are those that are general in nature and that apply broadly throughout the Apache National Forest. The forest supervisor may issue rules that supplement or differ from those on this map. Modifications will be posted in the forest supervisor’s office, ranger district offices, and at affected sites.
