Preparing Your Supplies Store Supplies in Advance If you're purchasing or making supplies, store them for 10-14 days before use to ensure cleanliness. Maintain a Sterile Workspace After the storage period, treat the preparation of your bags like a surgical procedure—cleanliness is crucial. Use 70% alcohol to thoroughly disinfect your work area, and be sure to wear gloves and a mask. Mixing Spawn and Substrate Measure the Spawn For 2-pound bags, use approximately 1 pound or 1 quart of fully colonized grain spawn. For 3-pound bags, use 1.5 pounds of colonized grain. Combine Carefully When combining the spawn and substrate, ensure that the two bags do not touch each other to prevent cross-contamination. Seal and Wait Once the spawn is added to the substrate bag, seal the top with a rubber band or impulse sealer. Mix all contents thoroughly, then press down to create an even cake. Allow it to colonize for 10-14 days—no misting is necessary during this period.Once the bag has started to solidify, place a rubber band around the base of the substrate on the outside of the bag. This will help keep the substrate against the side of the bag and prevent side pins. Regulate Moisture This optional step can help if excess moisture builds up in the bag. Increased airflow can regulate humidity levels. If pooling occurs or if the bag seems overly wet, cut a small slit (2-3 inches) below the filter once at 100% colonization and cover it with micropore tape.By following these steps, you can ensure a clean, controlled, and successful mushroom growing process. Harvesting and Preparing for the Next Flush Harvest at the Right Time Once your gourmet mushrooms have fully grown, open the bag and harvest them using the twist-and-pull technique. The ideal time to harvest is when the veil underneath the cap has just begun to break. Maintain Optimal Humidity After harvesting, mist the substrate heavily to maintain ideal moisture levels for the next flush of mushrooms. Prepare for the Second Flush With mushrooms harvested, your substrate is ready for another round of growth. Monitor humidity levels and continue misting as needed to support upcoming flushes.By following these steps, you can efficiently harvest your gourmet mushrooms while also preparing for a bountiful second flush. This will help maximize your overall mushroom yield and ensure a successful growing cycle. Use substrate within 30 days of receiving for optimal results.
