Prunus mexicana, affectionately known as the Mexican plum, is a delightful small tree that typically boasts a single trunk and stands upright, growing anywhere from a charming 8-15 feet tall, although it often matures to a lovely height of 15-25 feet. This native gem can be found stretching from the southeastern corner of South Dakota to Ohio, reaching as far down as Alabama, Texas, and northeastern Mexico. One of the standout features of this tree is its wonderfully fragrant and showy white flowers, which bloom in small clusters during the spring months of April and May, often just before or as the vibrant green leaves begin to unfurl. As for the edible plums, they start off as yellow jewels but transform beautifully on the tree from July to September, ripening to enchanting shades of rose, lavender, or purple. Their smooth reddish-gray bark matures to a stunning blue-gray, adorned with a rough texture, darker horizontal striations, and charming exfoliating patches.
