Grow Sensitive Plant from fresh Mimosa Pudica flower seeds. The Sensitive Plant is aptly named mainly because of it’s physical reaction to human touch. When you brush the leaves of Mimosa Pudica, you will notice that they will close for a few seconds to minutes, later opening back up. The leaves are not the only thing to react however, the branches themselves will also move when the leaves are touched. Each plant will grow several branches filled with with touchable leaves. Each Pinna will contain 10 to 26 leaflets. Mimosa Pudica, or “Sensitive Plant” will reach an average mature height of about 18 to 24 inches tall, but can sometimes grow to a couple of feet. They are established as annual plants, growing quickly and later dying with the first frost. The Mimosa Pudica plant may produce pink blooms through the summer after a few months of growth. The flowers are roughly 1/2 inch in diameter and will become more and more visible as the plants grow older. Mimosa Pudica is the scientific name for this species, but it is also known as “The plant that plays dead.” Other nicknames or “common names” include: Touch-Me-Not, Shy Plant, Humble Plant, Sleeping Grass, Noli Me Tangere, Modest Princess & Prayer Plant. Originating from Central & South America, Mimosa Pudica plants can be found in many tropical areas around the world.   Quick Facts Type: Flower Color: Pink Height: 18" to 24" Tall Width: 12" to 16" Spread Season: Annual Zones: 3 to 10 Environment: Full Sun Sowing The Seed Mimosa seeds can be soaked in warm water overnight to increase germination rates. They are best started indoors, in peat pots, 6 to 8 weeks prior to the last frost. Sow 2 or 3 seeds per pot at a depth of 1/8” under topsoil. Transplant entire peat pots into containers or directly in the garden when all danger of frost has passed. Growing Conditions Mimosa seeds and seedlings will require a well draining soil, that is rich and nourishing. They prefer an area of full sunlight for at least 6 to 8 hours daily. Water with a mild setting so that the soil is kept moist until germination occurs. Placing plastic wrap over the peat pots can help retain moisture. Best grown in temperatures that are kept around 65F to 70F. Germination & Growth Mimosa seeds will begin to sprout within 21 to 28 days after sowing, if not sooner. The plants will grow to a mature height of about 18 to 24 inches tall and can be spaced about 12 inches apart from one another. Plants react to your touch and are best grown in containers.
