Pass me the butter?” Carmen laughed at her friend’s remark, and tossed a stick of butter over the island, which Desi caught neatly, one-handed. Baking was a passion Carmen and Desi had shared since their sleep deprived college days, a way to alleviate the stresses of Calculus, Biochemistry, and messy romantic relationships. They could chat for hours waiting for dough to rise and pastry to chill, their many roommates slowly gathering in the kitchen to surround them is a warm circle of friendship, attracted by the delicious smells emanating from the oven. I had to pretend to need the bathroom to escape and collect myself. We do this walk around the park on our lunch break, and now every time I smell cedarwood I look around for him. How lucky Desi felt all of a sudden to be encircled by good friends, rallied to her home by love and the siren call of home baking.
