Trazodone is a SARI, or serotonin antagonist/reuptake inhibitor. It appears to work by releasing serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that regulates behavior, awareness of pain, appetite, body temperature, movement, and function of the lungs and heart. Dogs showing complusive behaviors, chronic pain, separation anxiety and situational fears like fireworks or thunderstorms are often prescribed Trazodone to keep them calm. Similarly, cats can experience generalized anxiety disorders and the same situational fears as dogs. Trazodone is prescribed, as a short-term anxiety medication, for anxiety and aggression during certain situations where the cat experiences increased levels of anxiety and stress, such as being transported in a pet carrier.
