A beautiful, highly collectable piece! - Circa 1930s - Composition and manufacture: hallmarked “1/20 12K” and with the Carl-Art symbol, an arrow through the letters “C A.” Signed on a separate bit of metal that is then affixed to the back of the piece, generally a hallmark of good metalwork. The gold performs somewhat weakly on an acid test for 10k gold--the hallmark may be slightly exaggerated, as is common in pieces of this age, or else some of the plate may have worn off in the 90 or so years since the piece was made. The surface level does perform more strongly than the same spot scratched (onto a testing block) twice more, which is typical of gold fill. - Design: delicate floral, foliate, and tendril motifs typical of 1930s Cal-Art pieces. A blue cabochon in flush mount setting is nestled in the petals of the bell flower. A loop for attaching a pendant is present beneath the flower, and another, smaller loop is present to allow you to attach a small watch, dangling gemstone, or other finding of your choice. The piece may have been intended to be worn as a pendant chained at the bust and with a small watch hanging from it, like the pearl sautoirs of the Edwardian era. (Pictured chain is not included.) - Closure: a round hinge and a safety clasp of the kind that began to be used in the late 1920s. The hinge and clasp are separate, not a pre-assembled unit, which is a mark of in-house craftsmanship. - Size: main floral motif is 1" x 1 1/2" (2.5 x 4cm); inclusive of the pendant loop, the piece is 1 1/4" x 1 1/2" (3.5 x 4cm). - Condition: good vintage condition with some wear to the gold fill on the back of the tendrils and at the base of the stems. Closure functions smoothly and holds securely. Stone setting is secure.
