The tangled Rat King is a mystery & tragedy of nature which has inspired myth and metaphor. The etymology of the Rat King in an interesting thing. The old German term Rattenkönig, meant someone who lived off others or simply the king of a pack of underlings. Martin Luther, a leader of the protestant reformation said "..finally, there is the Pope, the king of rats right at the top." The french "Rouet de rats" means wheel of rats, hinting that the individuals are merely the spokes of a terrible machine. I see these tangled vermin and think of human nature. Those downtrodden become hopelessly enmeshed in each other.. Perhaps freedom and autonomy are only toxic illusions .. lose your ego in the mosh pit of life, surrender to the wheel of collective strife!
