DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PURE SILVER and 925 STERLING SILVER
Rings and charms of my jewelry is pure silver and other parts such as chains, clasps and jump rings are 925 sterling silver. Pure silver contains 99.9% silver while 925 sterling silver contains 92.5% of silver and 7.5% of mostly copper. When it comes to value pure silver is more precious than 925 sterling silver. But the reason why sterling silver contains other metal is not only because of cost, but mainly to make silver durable and easy to work with. Pure silver, as well as pure gold is delicate and fragile metal. By alloying with other metals they become more durable.
DOES PURE SILVER TARNISH?
As all jewelry made of silver, pure silver also can be tarnished over time. But proper care and storage can considerably reduce and slow down the process. So, what exactly is tarnishing? Tarnish is a kind of oxidation (correctly sulfidation) that happens when silver comes into contact with sulfur-containing gases, which could be present in air molecules or emitted by certain substances. The resulting chemical reaction produces a silver sulfide compound, which coats the metal’s surface with a thin, black-colored film. Moreover, interaction with oils, cosmetics, water, and a few other substances accelerates the process and causes discoloration. Even wrapping the jewelry in printed paper or tissue paper which contains sulfur-based dyes, can tarnish it. Rubber bands, exhaust, leather, and cellophane can all speed up the process of tarnishing.
Also silver jewelry is more vulnerable to tarnishing in water and humidity. They should be kept in a cool, dry location like a container, jewelry box, or airtight bag. Before you put it in the package, all air must be drawn out so that no oxidation can occur.
HOW TO CLEAN YOUR SILVER JEWELRY
Materials you need:
A soup bowl (any vessel of size that you need for the items you are de-tarnishing)
Aluminum foil
Boiling water
1 tablespoon of baking soda for each cup of water
Spoon/kitchen tongs
A dry cleaning cloth
Bring the water to a boiling point – it should be enough water to cover all your jewelry in your bowl. Prior to pour the boiling water into the bowl, cover the bowl with aluminum foil, shiny side up.
Add 1 tablespoon of baking soda with each cup of water into the bowl, and place the jewelry in the bowl. Make sure that the jewelry is touching the aluminum foil – this is an essential part of the process for the chemical reaction to occur.
Leave in the solution for 2-5 minutes. If the level of tarnishing is really bad then you can leave it in up to 10 minutes.
Remove the jewelry with a pair of kitchen tongs or a spoon. Rinse under cool water. You may then shine it with the dry cleaning cloth.
