When the United Soccer Association launched in 1967, rather than build rosters from scratch, it imported established European clubs wholesale — and ADO Den Haag of the Dutch Eredivisie became the Gales for the season, coached by Austrian tactician Ernst Happel and featuring a 19-year-old Dick Advocaat among their players. They finished second in the Western Division, lost in the playoffs to the LA Wolves, and when the season ended the squad flew back to The Hague. The franchise folded with the league that winter.
