The same year James Madison won their football National Championship, Duke Dog was so close to winning JMU another title against Montana. As a finalist in the 2004 Capital One Mascot Bowl, Duke Dog finished 11-0 in his mascot matchups throughout the season. Despite this perfect record, a panel of judges selected the University of Montana’s Monte to win the Mascot Bowl. Because of this, future Mascot Bowl winners were solely based on popular voting.
