Any lesser bun would have perished in that briny dark. But Blueplaid? He simply held his breath, unpicked his own stitches, and sewed himself free. He rose to the surface clutching a bottle, and inside it, a letter from a stranger who had also loved and lost and lived to tell of it. "Well then," he said, wringing saltwater from his scarf, "that makes two of us, doesn't it." From that day forth, Blueplaid sailed the Seas of Love aboard vessels of his own peculiar making. Every bottle that bobbed past his bow, he fished from the waves and cracked open with trembling paws. Every letter inside, he unfolded and read aloud to the gulls and the moon. And from every letter, he folded a boat. Boats of apology. Boats of longing. Boats of the unspeakable, ridiculous, magnificent things people write when they believe no one will ever read them. His fleet numbered in the hundreds, each one a confession made seaworthy, and he captained them all with the solemn absurdity of a pirate who refuses to plunder anything but hope. If you have ever written a letter you were too afraid to send, know this: it found its way to water, and Blueplaid found it there. He read every word. He wept a little (for he is, above all things, a hopeless case). And then he folded it into a boat and sailed on, searching for the heart that wrote it. He is searching still.
