When is Ambrox® not Ambrox? When it's Ambrox DL! Ambrox DL is a Firmenich product which blends around 30% captive Cachalox® with 70% Cetalox (9-epi Ambrox).  While most Ambrox on the market (Ambrox Super, Ambrofix, Orcanox, Ambroxan) is Laevo-ambrox, Cetalox is the racemic version and has a more linear, clean dry wood character. It is subtler and less diffusive than Ambrox and it has less tendency to overwhelm other light materials. Laevo-Ambrox will give a richer, warmer and more intense result than Cetalox but Cetalox, on the other hand, can sometimes be perceived as more elegant. The other part of Ambrox DL is Cachalox, which is related to but has a weaker odour than Laevo-Ambrox. It does, however, have heightened fixative and diffusive properties. Ambrox DL is often a solid or pasty thick liquid at room temperature and some heat (typically hotter than tap or faucet hot) may be needed to loosen it up for pipetting. Notable as an example of oriental style perfumery, Areej Al Shouk by Ajmal uses just over 1% Ambrox® DL to boost the rich woody notes whilst giving lift to the tonkin deer fond (a blend of Muscenone® Delta and Muscone Laevo) and sparkle to the florals. Some other perfumes that incorporate Ambrox® DL are Not A Perfume (2010) by Juliette Has A Gun in which it is the only ingredient, Interlude Black Iris (2020) by Pierre Negrin for Amouage, Patchouli Absolu (2014) by Richard Herpin, Neroli Portofino (2011) by Rodrigo Flores-Roux and Tobacco Vanille (2007) by Olivier Gillotin all for Tom Ford; Philosykos (1996) by Olivia Giacobetti for Diptyque, and Amouage's Jubilation XXV (2007) by Bertrand Duchaufour. It should be noted that Cetalox is currently undergoing a regulatory recategorisation that may see it come under legislative fire and consequent IFRA/EU restriction.
