Roberto Lugo embraces classical pottery forms, using portraiture of political leaders and hip-hop icons with visual references from his upbringing in North Philadelphia to create objects that celebrate communities of colour and his own heritage. The Village Potter, Lugo’s online brand, reflects this mission as an extension of his artistic practice and everyday life, with the goal to foster accessibility between the general public and the fine art world. Village Potter works range from vibrantly patterned cups and subway car-styled butter dishes, to water tower coffee pour overs and pitbull-inspired umbrella stands. At its core, the Village Potter not only aims to contribute beautiful, functional objects, but to enrich and empower the culture and the lives of others through art and design.
