Overhead, the ceiling arched high and close, shaped from a braided canopy of living wood, branches fused together over generations. Light seeped through narrow slits, soft and green, filtering through the dense forest above. From the center, a coil of thick steam curled upward. It came from a bowl blackened with age, where dried clove had burst open, releasing their spicy essence into the dark air. The smoke drifted along the curved walls like a slow wind, drawn toward invisible lines carved into the tree itself. The witches moved in silence. One knelt beside me and traced a symbol on the floor with crushed petals. Another pulled twine through her fingers, knotting it without looking. Overhead, the rafters groaned. A brown leaf unhooked from the ceiling and fell between us, spinning as it dropped, then catching gently on the elder’s palm. She folded it into her pocket as if it were part of the ritual. She stepped to the firebowl and stirred it once. A sudden flare bloomed from within. Smoke woods, the color of wet ash and burnt bark rolled out, thick and alive, moving like a spirit through the hollow. It pressed against my skin. I could feel it searching. “Speak your name,” she said. I did. The roots tightened around us. The floor seemed to breathe. The others began to hum, and the sound filled the hollow like rising water.
