Starry Blenny - Indonesia

Salarias ramosusThe Starry Blenny is a striking and engaging reef fish that brings both personality and function to a marine aquarium. Adults have a reddish-brown to dark brown body marked with irregular white spots and small, frilly cirri above the eyes, giving them a distinctive and “starry” appearance. Like other blennies, they lack a swim bladder and spend much of their time perched on rocks or darting among crevices, so an aquarium with plenty of live rock, ledges, and hiding places is essential. Starry Blennies typically grow to about 5.5 inches (14 cm) and are best suited for tanks of 30 gallons or larger. They are generally peaceful toward other fish but may defend their territory against other blennies or similar species. A tight-fitting lid is recommended, as they are known to jump. In the wild, this species inhabits shallow inshore reefs and estuaries of the western central Pacific, including the Philippines and northwestern Australia, where they thrive among rocky outcrops and algae-covered substrates. They are primarily herbivorous, feeding naturally on filamentous algae and biofilm. In captivity, they do well on algae-based foods, spirulina pellets, and occasional frozen items such as mysis or brine shrimp. Feeding twice daily helps maintain their vibrant coloration and overall health. Considered reef-safe, Starry Blennies typically leave corals and invertebrates unharmed, and their algae-grazing behavior makes them both visually appealing and a practical addition to a reef aquarium.
