This was recommended to me by someone so i got it for our first baby. The rule of thumb is no nail "clipping" for the first six weeks of life because the nail is still attached to the skin all the way up so you can only file. I was AMAZED at how quickly my newborn's nails grew!! And holy crap are they razor blade sharp!!!! I love how there are thicker pads for as they age (because lets be serious....I don't want to "cut" my babe's nails ever because she's only going to be more alert and more difficult the older she gets!)
