There is no denying it: this smells like cannabis… and vetiver and rhubarb. Vetikolacetat (also called veticol or vetikol acetate) is a truly interesting material. In small amounts it adds a wonderful vetiver note in the complete absence of any natural vetiver, but it is also a magnificent nuancer and booster for the essential oil. We use it in our best selling Vetiver fragrance, Serge Lutens uses 0.4% as the sole vetiver note in his Ambre Sultan (1993) for ladies and gentleman, and 0.25% is found in the plush Amouage masculine Interlude Black Iris where it modifies 2% natural vetiver. It's relatively long lasting, novel and versatile, being able to be coaxed in a myriad directions depending on the skill of the perfumer; in one direction it is the memory of a hazy drug fuelled party, in another it is a dank barnyard beneath a lowering sky, and in yet another it is a fresh rhubarb note adding interest to a delicious gourmand; add Veratraldehyde and lactones for a custard note (with a trace of Sulfurol and Butyric Acid for enhanced egginess).
