Muscenone is perhaps the nicest of the musk chemicals and certainly one of the most profound in its ability to add radiance, blending and fixation to a fragrance. This musk has the ability to put people at ease and to induce comfort, so much so that casinos famously spray it through their air conditioning ducts to keep clients gambling longer. Muscenone can be used in trace to overdose. According to Arctander: “Delicate, but extremely tenacious musky odor, upon dilution developing more woody notes, ot quite as soft and velvety as those of the Muscone, perhaps equal in power, but inferior in beauty.” And Perfumery: Techniques in Evolution (a series of articles published in Perfumer and Flavorist magazine) says: “If habanolide is radiant, floral and musky with metallic notes, muscenone δ is animal, strongly musk tonkin, and plays a role in the natural product’s odor, perhaps, more important than muscone. […] Muscenone δ smells of the most animal-like part of deer musk powder or musk absolute, if made. All of these unsaturated macro cyclic musks are incredibly strong and accords we made in the past mixed cresols with exaltolide or muscone and are now much finer and more elegant when using muscenone δ or chemically related products. It is being widely used in fragrances such as Bulgari for Men.” Muscenone even finds its uses in the world of ouds and attars; the wonderful tonkin musk note of Ajmal's Areej Al Shouk is owed largely to this chemical in combination with a touch of Muscone Laevo.
