In the Attic

"After my father died in late 2020, I didn't pick up the guitar for nearly 16 months. The grief crushed me. My father and I had grown quite close in the last few years of his life because he frequently traveled with me to out-of-state gigs - essentially acting as my roadie and psychiatrist all in one. His presence helped me through the debilitating anxiety that came with performing music in front of an audience. It never came easy for me, and some nights he had to really push me to get on that stage. If I'm being honest, I guess a big part of me intrinsically tied my relationship with my father to music. It was our way of bonding. Dad's playlist was a mirror image of mine. In his absence, the music left. I picked up a pen and journaled for a long time and started consistently practicing meditation while working through grief until late 2022, when many of the things I had been writing about started developing melodies of their own.
