The actual banana split dessert that inspired this candy was invented in 1904 by 23-year-old apprentice pharmacist David Evans Strickler at Tassel Pharmacy in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, about 20 miles from our warehouse. The pharmacy was one of McKeesport Candy Co's customers in the 1920's and 30's! By the mid-20th century, the banana split flavor had made its way into the American candy aisle, courtesy of New England Confectionery Company (NECCO), giving sweet-tooths everywhere a portable, pocket-sized version of the classic parlor treat. NECCO may not have invented this candy - no one knows for sure who did - but these were a mainstay of their candy offerings until their bankruptcy in 2018!
