This stunning Anglo Saxon and Viking lang seax is a classic weapon from the 10th and 11th centuries and was a serious warriors secondary weapon. However knives very similar to this were in use up until the end of the 12thC - see the carving from a 12thC Cathedral. The blade is modelled very closely on the dimensions of existing archaeological finds and is of the classic ‘broken back’ type that was very current in this period thickening slightly from handle to the ‘break’ giving the knife a tonne of authority and a very stiff blade perfect for piercing. It has a long grip in ash and horn, decorated with dot and circle motifs and finished with brass rivet details. The sheath is plated with etched brass plates and the sheath is carved and the whole piece comes with very typical suspension loops again with brass fittings. And was typically worn at the front of the body with the edge uppermost. Blade 29cm/11.5” Grip length 16cm/6.25” Overall length 45cm/17.75” Weight 370g Edge sharpness Semi-Sharp is 'butter knife sharp'; it has a very fine flat on the edge.
