They were partially owned by entertainer Pat Boone a talented basketball player in his own right. In their first season, the Oaks were the worst team in the league. Major changes were made the following season with the addition of coach Alex Hannum and all-star Rick Barry who was in a contract dispute with the cross-Bay Warriors. The moves paid off, and the Oaks won the championship. Attendance, though, continued to lag.
