Their lone World Series appearance came in 1944 against the crosstown rival Cardinals — the only all-St. Louis World Series ever — which the Browns lost in six games. When Gussie Busch bought the Cardinals and their shared stadium in 1953, the Browns could no longer compete financially. The franchise relocated to Baltimore at the end of that season.
