Costus root oil is now prohibited by IFRA and its trade is highly restricted due to CITES. Fortunately IFF produce this wonderful base which, as far as natural replacers go, is an extremely good facsimile of the wild variety. Costus oil is a rather unusual oil, having a distinctly animal odour (in the direction of wet dog or goat). It is particularly good blended with orris materials and it probably had its greatest outing as a key player in the original Miss Dior (1947) by Jean Carles for Dior. Use this base one for one as a replacer whenever Costus Oil is called for in an old formula.
