Description and usage notes: This is a highly effective musk even in small doses, velvety smooth with a distinctive powdery dry-down and ability to add volume to a fragrance. Like Ambrettolide or Exaltone it can be used to enhance other musks and is great with Romandolide and Ethylene brassylate. Description from Givaudan: “Velvione is an exceptional product: a powdery macrocyclic musk that is powerful, highly substantive and stable, as well as biodegradable. Velvione has a nitro-musk aspect that is not found either in other commonly used macrocyclic musks, nor in polycyclic musks. Velvione is excellent in all applications, including fine fragrance, where it adds a powdery volume and musky softness.” Typical use level can vary from as little as 0.1% in the fragrance compound right up to 100% as for example in Velviona from Helmut Lang in 2001, which contains no other fragrance ingredients at all. Velvione will solidify at lower room temperatures but requires only gentle warming to return it to a liquid state. Note that this 16 carbon ring, macrocyclic musk is the same molecule as Ambretone (by Takasago) but although very similar to Globanone (by Symrise) the latter is a different isomer, less intense and lacking the nitro-musk character typical of Velvione, which is however also present in the related Cosmone.
