gamma-Methyl Ionone Description and usage notes: This is a very high quality of gamma-Methyl Ionone made by IFF, broadly equivalent to the Givaudan product Cetone Alpha and our generic Methyl Ionone Iso Super. IFF describe their product like this: "Woody, tobacco, floral (orris and violet). Powdery tone. Great strength as both top and body notes. Excellent performance to cost ratio." Note that although the IFF details sheet lists Tocopherol as the stabiliser, the stock we have has BHT as stabiliser - it's likely that when we re-stock that will change as IFF are phasing out the use of BHT.  Also note that there is a similar, but different, IFF product Methyl Ionone Gamma Coeur, which has a lower proportion of the gamma (iso-alpha) isomer. Arctander says of this material: “The odor of this isomer is generally considered more attractive than any other Methylionone, perhaps with the exception of the beta-iso-Methylionone, so-called delta-Methylionone. It is extremely versatile in character, and effects ranging from sweet floral to tobacco-like or woody are obtainable with various grades of subject material. The most refined grades, which are quite expensive, often show a very attractive ‘creamy’ top-note and a most uniform, powdery-sweet dryout performance. This type of Methylionone can support floral notes in Ylang-Ylang as well as woody notes in Vetiver, or leathery notes in Salicylates, etc. Certain types of perfume contain up to 25% or more of this material. Many soap perfumes are based upon a large volume of common-grade Methylonone with the subject isomer as pre-dominant component.” Calkin & Jellinek talk about Methyl Ionone: “Methyl ionone is one of the most versatile materials used in perfumery. Although it occurs in a number of different isomeric forms ... the qualities most widely used today are either the gamma (iso-alpha) form or a mixture of isomers in which this predominates. In odor it lies somewhere between floral, woody, and iris, working in a perfume as a bridge between the middle and base notes.
