Description and usage notes: The pure crystals barely smell at all and are not easy to dissolve in cold ethanol, however they dissolve in most perfume oils and we also supply this material pre-dissolved in PEA at 10%. Arctander says that this material “has found wide application in perfume compositions as a fixative in Rose and Geranium compounds, soap fragrances, powder perfumes, etc. because of its excellent stability and fixative effect. Its odor is better understood upon evaluation of Phenylethylalcohol with and without 5% of this material. There are still perfumers who find the title ester odorless or without any perfumery value, and it is sometimes because the material has been judged too hastily without a compounding experiment. Effective level is perhaps higher than 2%, but concentrations higher than 4% are rarely seen, although the material is inexpensive and freely available. The perfumer is simply satisfied with the effect, quite perceptible at that low level. It is one of the very few chlorinated chemicals in common use in perfumes, and it has been popular ever since its discovery late in the 19th century.”  For a more modern and unusual effect, consider using this material with Rosamusk for a clean, ambery rose effect.
